UNITED STATES ENGLISH
UNITED STATES ENGLISH, also US English, USE. An alternative term for AMERICAN ENGLISH, the English language as used in the United States of America. The term is used especially by those who wish to make a clear distinction between US and Canadian usage or avoid the ambiguities inherent in the word American. The difficulty arose because the name United States of America has no simple and natural adjectival form; citizens of the land early solved the problem for their own purposes by adopting American from the last word of the country's name, an adjective already used for the western hemisphere and in colonial times for its English-speaking settlers.
